AUSANGATE - 7D/6N
A clear day in Cusco reveals the shining white massif of Nv. Ausangate to the southeast of the city. The peak stands like a sentinel over the Cusco valley, its 6372 meter height surpassing that of all other peaks in the region. Surrounding Nv. Ausangate are the jagged peaks of the Cordillera Vilcanota, a range of mountain clustered together to form rugged hiking territory and vistas of startling beauty.

Within the valleys of the Cordillera Vilcanota live an abundance of animals, both wild and domesticated. Vicuñas roam freely over the rolling hills, and nearly every highland bird, from the giant coot with its comic oversized feet to the predatory mountain caracara, can be found in the skies and on the lakes of the area. Also, huge herds of tame llamas and alpacas graze in the broad valleys.

The farmers who live in the shadows of the mountains go about their lives in a manner that has altered little over hundreds of years. As speakers of quechua, they know little or no Spanish. They tend their herds and plant fields of potatoes, the only crop that can survive the altitude’s bitter alements. At best, their contact with the worl beyond their villages and valleys remains limited.
:: ITINERARY························>
 Day 1: Cusco-Tinki
A day’s travel to get Tinki, which is located just beyond the town of Ocongate. The trip takes around 7 hours, much of it is over rough, dirt road. A hike around the base of Nv. Ausangate contains both spectacular mountain scenery and highland animal life. Not only does the circle Nv. Ausangate, but it also passes numerous other snowcapped peaks and ice cold lakes nestled at the mountain foot. Amid this natural beauty, we can also enjoy the luxury of a relaxing bath in the medicinal hot springs that are found at both the beginning and the end of the trek. We hike for about 40 minutes to Hatunpampa campside.

 Day 3: Upis-Laguna
Pucacocha

We hike some 2 hours to the ridge berween Nv. Ausangate and Nv. Queullacocha. Continue up the valley along the right slope before climbing a rock-strewn area that lies between the 2 peaks. A hut and a few corrals form the last settlement. We cross the first pass. The Arapa pass (4800 mts. -10950 fts). Campside around Pucacocha lake.

 Day 5: Pampacancha-
Pachispata

We hike in a larger valley of Chillcamayu. We pass corrals and herds of lamas and alpacas. Along the way, the peaks of Tres Picos and Puca Punta come into sight. Amid rocks and bounders, we can spot mountain viscachas, animals related to chinchilla and who live in warrens among the rocks, this rodent has long ears and a long tail and looks like a cross between a rabbit and a giant gerbil. Still hiking, we see in front of us the icefield and the last Qampa pass (5000 mts. – 11400 fts). The pass, lies to the left of the icefield in a corridor between Nv. Puca Punta and the mountain mass of Nv. Ausangate. The trail from the pass down to Comercocha lake. 2 lakes more come into sight off to the right. We arrive in the Pachispata village and camp.

 Day 7: Pachanta-

 Day 2: Hatun Pampa-Upis
The trail from Hatunpampa campside to the village of Upis runs over hilly pampa and takes 6 or 7 hours to hike. We walk in the direction of Nv. Ausangate’s glacier, the area is well-populated. While hiking through the spiky ichu grass of the pampa, we may see an Andean gull hovering on the winds. The marshes and small ponds around Upis provide a perfect habitat for the bird. Just before Upis we enter a broad valley heading to ward the glacier. We walk up this valley along its left slope. Continue up the valley to the medicinal hot springs. We spend the night here.

 Day 4: Laguna
Pucacocha-Pampacancha
The waters of the lakes harbor a variety of birds. Waterfowl sucha as Andean geese, giant coots and ducks paddle about upon the water’s surface.
