INCA TRAIL - MACHUPICCHU 2D/1N
The whole of Peru was once criss-crossed with Inca and Pre-Inca highways. They were paved with thick interlooking blocks of stone, and varied in quality and width. On the plains and rolling uplands they might be as much as 6 meters wide; in the mountains, less than a meter. Sometimes they followed the valleys, but just as often they traversed the high mountainsides, tracing impossible pathways and following narrow ledges above the bottomless gorges of the Andes. The trails were built for men on foot, and lightly-burdened llamas.

Day 1: Cusco-Km 104-
Pueblo Aguas Calientes
We pick up from your hotel at 5:40 am and transfer to the train station. Morning train from Cusco to the km 104 where we start to hike. Shortly after crossing the Urubamba river and checking our autorization, the trail passes through the interesting Inca complex of Chachabamba (2100 mts – 6550 fts), and then begins to climb around the mountainside into the ravine bellow Wiñaywayna (2700 mts – 8900 fts). After a spectacular waterfall, we climb through the Inca complex and join the main Inca Trail. Around this place we find some facilities as restaurant, bar, toilet, etc. Wiñaywayna was discovered in 1941. This archaeological side was built on the steepest of mountain slopes, flanked by ancient farming terraces and ritual baths. Historical data confirm that ritual bathing or cleaning was an important feature of Inca religious observance. The element of water itself was also worshipped. Ritual baths are a feature of every major Inca site, but they are particularly numerous on the Inca Trail sites. This is another factor among many which support the view that Machupicchu – Inca Trail network held a special spiritual significance for the Incas.
From here, only the last leg of the Inca Trail lies between you and Machupicchu. The trail levels off and heads in a downriver direction high along the ridge above the Urubamba river. The ridge is covered with dense vegetation and, far below and suddently the whole Sacred Santuary of Machupicchu is spread out before us, we are now standing at the entrance to Machupicchu (2400 mts – 7900 fts), the lost city of the Incas.
From the sun gate we descend into Machupicchu (2400 mts – 7950 fts) in which we spend some minutes taking some pictures and then pass straight through to the check point and go down to Aguas Calientes town (2000 mts – 6600 fts). If you want, you can take a medicinal bath in its hot springs. We spend the night in a hotel.
